The piece of legislation has put a timely obligation on vehicle manufacturers to prevent waste in a variety of ways. Firstly, the reduction in the use of hazardous substances when designing vehicles includes the requirement that vehicles do not contain mercury, hexavalent chromium, cadmium or lead. Secondly, there is a need for manufacturers to make allowance for safe dismantling, re-use, recovery and recycling of their vehicles in the design and manufacturing process; and thirdly, the directive has stated an aim for more recycled materials to be included in the manufacturing process.
